A Bishop in the rain.

St Swithin was an Anglo-Saxon Bishop of Winchester.
According to tradition if it rained on his feast day, the 15th July, it would rain for the next 40 days.

I don't remember if it was raining on the 15 july but it has rained on this 'Bishop' today!

Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff.'

What sort of St Swithin weather have you been enjoying?

  1. It's Wales therefore it's wet. Love your Bishop. I love Dahlias but the hubby won't have them in the garden as he's convinced they attract earwigs and he's got a phobia of them.

    1. Earwigs do like to hide in Dahlias. They are probably in the garden anyway. My Grandfather use to show Dahlias, he placed upside down flower pots containing newspaper to catch them in.

  2. I do love the Bishop. Have you tried growing seeds from him? I have got some really dark red flowers over the years by selecting the darkest and growing them on.
Wet and windy for the last few days, now we have had a good soak it would be nice to get Summer back.

  3. What a beautiful photo. Some plants look glorious in the rain. I can't remember being concerned on St Swithin's, so I guess it either a) didn't rain here or b) I didn't know what day of the week it was. These heavy showers have been very welcome, but I am delighted to see some sun this morning. I have a strong childhood memory of someone talking about my ancestors showing plants and of those upturned earwig pots. I guess they were probably showing Dahlias.
